Hanoi

Hanoi overview

Smaller than Saigon, but extra stunning

Hanoi and the surrounding area have a lot to interest visitors. Its central area is compact - many of the predominant points of interest are inside walking distance. Tree-lined boulevards, colonial buildings and lots of lakes make nice routes for a pedestrian tour. If you do not mind turning into an attraction for the Vietnamese, a ‘cyclo’ tour generally is a less strenuous approach of seeing a few of the sites. Guests which are more adventurous could also be attracted by cycling or riding on the again of a bike - nevertheless, it is a choice best made after you have seen the visitors scenario!

It’s also a remarkably safe city. The extent of crime is low, and what exists rarely involves violence. Aside from commonsense precautions, further safety measures are unnecessary.

Around Hanoi

There are the various craft villages around Hanoi. Bat Trang, specializing within the production of good quality pottery and ceramics, Van Phu, a silk weaving community, and Dong KY, famous for its carved mother-of-pearl, are three examples. The range of merchandise produced in craft villages is bewildering - cane birdcages, effective silk, knives, rattan, cooking oil and dozens more.

Le Mat, where many households are famous for his or her ability in breeding snakes for medicinal purposes, food and ‘snake wine’ (popular with Vietnamese men as a lift for virility), is one we avoid. The snakes are collected indiscriminately from the wild by peasants - a current police raid discovered effectively over a hundred snakes in the Crimson E-book of endangepurple species from a single restaurant.

The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum Area

Within the centre of Hanoi, a large area is dedicated to Ho Chi Minh. The centerpiece is a large mausoleum the place his embalmed physique lies in a bier inside a glass case. Guests must be a part of a queue and file by means of the room without stopping. No photography is allowed, and all private possessions must be overlooked side (provision is made for this).

It’s a macabre experience, however most visitors foreign seem to find strangely shifting, perhaps due to the undisguised reverence of the Vietnamese people present.

Hoan Kiem Lake

Located within the centre of Hanoi, Hoan Kiem Lake (‘Lake of the Returned Sword) is thought to be the heart of the city. Once a marshy lagoon, it owes it’s identify and its fame to a robust legend, a close parallel to an episode in the UK’s Arthurian mythology.

When Vietnam was occupied by forces of the Chinese language Ming in the 15th century, Le Loi, a resistance leader, netted a powerful sword while fishing on the Lake. The ability of the sword led Le Loi to victory and the expulsion of the Chinese. Later, as Emperor Le Thai To, he rowed out on the lake once extra to return the sword from whence it got here in gratitude for his success. A sudden clap of thunder hires the air, whereupon a golden ‘tortoise’ emerged from water to take the sword from his hand and return it to the depths.

Hanoi's Market

Covered markets ('Cho' in Vietnamese) are often housed in large, objective-constructed constructions, but typically spill over into their surrounding areas. They promote vast range of commodities and produce, and tend to be somewhat smelly, particularly around the contemporary meat and fish sections.

Here are four of the best:

Cho Dangle Da: very crowded, but very Vietnamese. It’s a good place to look for ceramics and pottery.

Hanoi Museum

Unless stated in any other case, museums are closed on Mondays

The Ethnology Museum (08.30 to 12.30, and 13.30 to 16.30)

Hanoi’s Ethnology Museum stands out as Vietnam’s best-managed cultural institution. Despite its location in the suburbs about a half hour’s drive from the city centre, it attracts streams of visitors.

Its subject matter is solely the 54 ethnic groups of Vietnam. The presentation of its intensive collection is imaginatively and effectively presented using dioramas, life-dimension models of people and reconstructions of dwellings, and carefully positioned video screens. The interpretation of each content and language is good.

Hanoi with other attraction

St. Joseph’s Cathedral

Inbuilt European neo-Gothic style St. Joseph's Cathedral dominates a small sq. in the heart of Hanoi's tourist area facing a street of eating places and boutiques.

It was one of many first buildings erected by the French colonists, and was completed in 1886 - most of the materials and a lot of the craftspeople were imported from France. Many of the stained glass windows are original and good examples of the craft.

Mass is held twice daily (5am-7am and 5pm-7pm), however visitors can enter through a side door when the principle doors are closed.

Van Mieu - Hanoi's ancient Temple of Literature

Built within the latter part of the ninth century, Van Mieu is among the oldest universities within the world. Its unique objective was the worship of the sages and saints of Confucianism; however six years later, a National College was established on the site. Initially, it admitted solely princes, but quickly expanded to admit bright students nationwide.

The Temple of Literature is surrounded by brick walls. Inside, the complex is separated into 5 areas. The first area incorporates the primary gate with the inscription "Van Mieu Mon" (Disciple of Temple of Literature) and two stone dragons within the style of the Le So Dynasty.

Hanoi temples

Tran Quoc Pagoda

The original pagoda was constructed within the 6th century and is considered the oldest in Vietnam. It was based on the bank of the Pink River by King Ly Nam De who named it Khai Quoc (National Founder). A lot later, it was moved to its present website beside Hanoi’s Ho Tay (West) Lake throughout the reign of King Le Kinh Tong (1600-1618) and renamed Tran Quoc (National Defense). The present constructing is the results of major renovations in 1815, but one in every of its effigies dates again to the early seventeenth century.

Within the garden, there's a Pipal Tree (ficus religious, however identified all through history because the Bodhi tree) seemingly grown from a chopping of the original tree where Buddha sat and gained enlightenment.
